How We Compel People To Do Stuff
Yesterday we talked about having a compelling vision, and I begrudgingly admitted that organizations need a compelling vision.
Why?
The reason why leaders need a compelling vision is wrapped up in the question I want to answer today. “How do we compel followers?”
When the vision is compelling, it is no longer (mostly) about the leader.
Even if the leader came up with and cast the vision, once it’s out there, it takes on a life of its own.
That said, I believe in ownership.
We own our things and our intellectual property. We own our feelings, our past, and even our future. We own our time, our money, our friendships (not our friends, but our friendships). We have responsibility. Stewardship.
A leader owns his or her vision. He or she has stamped his or her name on it.
Now, if the followers are going to follow the vision, then they too must own it.
That’s why I say a vision takes on a life of its own. In a way, it becomes bigger than the original owner like a country becomes bigger than its first citizen.
I’m starting to feel some peace here and the cringe is dissipating. We’re getting somewhere.
If I have been entrusted by the church to be the main vision bearer, I have to own a vision and then sell it to them (not that I have to come up with it all by myself). They have to buy it, and when they do, it is theirs. Not just mine.
One important question is “how do you sell it?” Is it with slimy salesman tactics?
No. I hope not.
What then?
I believe the vision itself must be compelling. They have to want to “buy” it.
When I sell my writing services, I don’t sell. People contact me through a website. I contact them back, and if we meet up on Zoom or the phone, there is a good chance they know what I offer and how much it costs.
They already wanted my help. They already bought the vision.
When you are creating or starting something, you don’t need very many people to like it. You just need some people to love it.
The way to find those people is to put it out there. Put out your thing as authentically and clearly stated as possible. Somebody, somewhere is looking for you, even if they don‘t know it.
You have articulated their heart’s desire.
For my businesses, their heart’s desire is to write the book they’ve been called to write. They need somebody to help them. They are relieved to find me.
What is your thing? What is your vision?
For the church we’re planting, we are still formulating the exact words, but the vision has something to do with “equipping people to live honest, loving, joyful, productive, Christ-centered lives.”
While that seems general, it’s not. I won’t get into the details (unless you want me to), but people come and find out what we are, and they either love it or they don’t.
Now, how does the leader himself (or herself) factor in? What does their leadership ability/gifting have to do with their success at “selling” a vision? What about the strength of their personality?
Let’s save that for tomorrow.
