Merry Day After Christmas
Merry Day After Christmas
Some of us aren’t done with Christmas. We won’t take the tree down yet because we have other relatives who couldn’t come on or before Christmas. Maybe they had to visit other relatives—perhaps the rival in-laws (I love my rival in-laws, by the way).
Anyway, Christmas is still going until everyone has come and gone, and it’s time to start celebrating the New Year.
And then that will come and go.
And it will no longer feel like a holiday.
Will you be a little sad? Or will you be ready to get on with it?
I think, this year, I’ll be a little sad.
It has to do with the fact that our kids are growing up and moving out, but on holidays they come back.
But it also has to do with the fact that I feel justified taking a break from work when they’re here, it’s a holiday, and when it seems like any sane person would rest.
Today, I’m going to process a little of what that means for my work.
I always want to approach work as something I get to do. Am I there yet?
Or will there always be something about even the most fulfilling work in this life that still longs for rest? God rested.
I’ve had jobs I hated, but it’s been ages. For more than two decades, I’ve been blessed to do fulfilling and even fun work.
But that desire to rest never goes away. I’m built for Sabbath, and I’m built for heaven.
I tend to think there is work to do in heaven, but I bet there is Sabbath in heaven too.
What do you think? How do you feel about the coming and going of the holidays?
How do you feel about working and resting?
Do you feel you have a mature and wise perspective on all this? Please share it with us.
