Power, What Is It For?

We ended yesterday with the question: Why should anyone have great power over others?
The idea was to understand the opposite of Uncle Ben’s (Spider-Man’s uncle) sage advice: “With great power comes great responsibility.”

The reverse is: With great responsibility comes great power.
Now that I think of it, I don’t like Uncle Ben’s statement because it assumes that having great power gives you a duty to take great responsibility.
If he only means that having great power means you’d better be responsible, like owning an assault rifle comes with great responsibility (to be safe), then I’m here for it.
But if it is taken to mean that having an assault rifle (or Spidey senses and web-slinging ability) means you must go out and be a vigilante, then no, I don’t think so.
But that is how people often think of “what they’ve been given.“
You have talent or money; you must use it to build something big for the world, kingdom, or humanity.
Yeah, but what?
Now, go back to the reversal: With great responsibility comes great power.
I like this one better. It sounds like it means if I am willing to take responsibility, then I can achieve the means to accomplish big things if I want to.
Now I think about the little church I’m pastoring. It is not a great responsibility because there are not many people there, not a lot of money to manage, and not a prominent voice in our community. It is not a “powerful” church in that sense.
(On-the-other-hand, any spiritual leadership of even one person is a massiveresponsibility.)
I am not saying that the goal of a church (or company, or person) should be to get powerful, but there are simply fewer things we can do when we are tiny. It is accurate to say we have less power than we would otherwise.
What is power anyway? It’s the ability to do stuff. Ahhh, this may be an excellent place to start tomorrow. Power.
For now, since this is Biblical Human, “And he called the twelve together and gave them power…” — Luke 9:1a
