The Best Bible Verse For Anxiety-When Anxiety Keeps You From Changing
I recently read something about anxiety.
It turns out: Anxiety is the thing that keeps you from positive change.
Huh?
You want to change, but anxiety creeps up and sabotages your effort.
How?
It connects your old way to the new way you want to be.
For example:
The old way: I sleep in and don’t read my Bible.
The new way: I get up 30 minutes early and read my Bible.
What could be simpler? Just do it.
But we rarely change; if we do, we don’t stay changed.
Why?
Anxiety.
What does anxiety have to do with immunity to change?
There is a powerful and profound reason you don’t want to change that is stronger than the reasons you do want to change. That reason is sending signals in the form of anxiety.
Let’s say you’ve committed to getting up early and reading your Bible.
But you don’t. Why?
Because…
Deep down, you are afraid to do it, because you are afraid of what will happen if you do.
What is that? What is it that you are afraid might happen?
It could be anything, but here are some hypotheticals:
You are afraid to go to bed early because you know your mind, and Satan will start attacking you at the level of your shame. You’d rather stay up and distracted until you’re too exhausted to think.
Or…
You are afraid to commune with God. He might start showing you where He thinks your life is off track. You might need to make some big, uncomfortable changes. You hit the snooze and avoid the problem.
Or…
Your friends would never get up early and read the Bible. They all stay up late wasting time, and deep down, you don’t want to ascend above them and risk having no friends.
Or…
You simply don’t see yourself as that guy or girl who does that, and it’s just foreign enough to be scary.
If you can identify it and name it, that’s a great start.
But then…
Apply one the greatest Bible passage on anxiety and worry: Matthew 6:25-34. I’ll just quote the last few verses.
31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Therefore, do not be anxious about anything. Your Heavenly Father is quite aware of what you and I need.
Seek His kingdom… that is, seek to make Him functionally in charge of all your life.
Seek His righteousness… that is, constantly consider what is true, just, and good, and orient towards it daily.
Understand in peace that all things will be added to you in good time as a result.
Give the specific fear to God, roll your old identity (for instance, the identity that sleeps in and doesn’t read its Bible) over a cliff, and put on Christ and His Righteousness.
Do different things as a result.
God will help you with this. This is why He gave us His Holy Spirit. Just ask Him.
